Conference summary

When prescribed and administered correctly, antibiotics are important in the treatment of bacterial infections. In recent years, there has been a growing trend to reduce the extended use of antibiotics for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, since their overuse has triggered the emergence of resistant bacterias.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) stands out in the formulation and constant update of recommendations that guide pediatric dentist in antibiotics prescription. A correct selection of the drug to be administered and the knowledge of  its’ indications in the most common pathologies of the oral cavity in the child are necessary for a good clinical practice.

Adjustment of dosage according to age and pathophysiological characteristics of the child, in constant growth and development, is another difficulty in the treatment of the pediatric population. It is important to recognize that the treatment is always done in a dynamic perspective that privileges the individuality of the child.

The main objective of this lecture is to present therapeutic protocols, based on the best scientific knowledge, highlighting the main indications of prophylaxis and antibiotic therapy in Pediatric Dentistry.
