Conference summary

The oral cavity plays a critical role in numerous physiological processes, including digestion, breathing, and speech. The mouth is often involved in pathologies that affect the skin and/or other systems, but is also affected by many systemic pathologies. Oral involvement may precede or accompany the appearance of findings elsewhere.

The objective of this lecture is to provide an overview of the conditions that may lead to an increase in the prevalence, incidence or severity of gingival manifestations of systemic pathologies, including side effects of certain drugs e.g.: nifedipine, cyclosporine and dilantin; inflammatory, autoimmune and/or immunomodulated diseases, including Crohn’s, pemphigus vulgaris, MMP, erythema multiforme and lichen planus; infectious diseases such as those caused by HSV, VZV, HPV, HIV and KSHV; besides malignancy, including the various types of leukemia.

Finally, the gingival characteristics of systemic pathologies can generally help manage these disorders and, in fact, such symptoms may decrease the quality of life of the affected individuals. Primary oral healthcare providers play an important role in this context, as they are often the first health professionals to observe such conditions.
