Conference summary

In patients with severe periodontitis, the treatment should always follow a multidisciplinary approach. In this context, the orthodontic treatment is a crucial part of the corrective phase of the periodontal treatment as it aims to correct aesthetic and functional sequels of periodontal destruction; orthodontic correction of these sequels is the most conservative way to accomplish this aim.

In the presence of periodontal health, the orthodontic treatment can be successful even in cases of a very limited periodontal support, but these patients require continuous monitoring, because recurrence of periodontitis during orthodontic treatment creates an iatrogenic effect on the remaining periodontal support leading to need of the interruption of the forces and suspension of the treatment.

This presentation will focus on the different aspects of the relationship between orthodontics and periodontics, with a special emphasis on the correction of the aesthetic and functional sequels of advanced periodontitis. Several cases will be presented and discussed, illustrating the complementarity between the two areas of dental medicine.
