Conference summary

In most cases, the orthodontic treatment is sought to treat an already established problem of malpositioned teeth or jaws. However, this specialty can have an important preventive component for a series of problems, such as gingival recession. Prevention can even start very early, in the beginning of the mixed dentition, when the incisors erupt in an edge-to-edge position.

One of the goals of the orthodontic treatment is to position the teeth over the bone envelope, which becomes a challenge in cases of severe crowding or when dental compensations are needed to treat the malocclusions. Treatments with too much expansion or proinclination may origin gingival recessions, sometimes evident only several years after the completion of the orthodontic treatment. Even during the retention phase, periodontal control of the patient is essential, since the fixed retainers themselves can be the cause of severe gingival recession. In these cases, orthodontic re-treament and periodontal care are indicated.

The treatment plan is fundamental to define how orthodontics can help in the prevention and treatment of gingival recessions.

All these topics will be addressed in this oral communication, using a literature review ad the presentation of demonstrative clinical cases.
