Conference summary

Retention is arguably the most important part of any orthodontic treatment plan, but traditionally it has been a topic that has been neglected in orthodontics and dentistry. In recent years, we have developed a much better understanding of retention and stability, and Simon Littlewood has a keen interest in this field. He is the lead author on the Cochrane review looking at orthodontic retention & has undertaken his own research in this field as well as appearing in educational videos about retention.

Dr Littlewood will share the most up-to-date scientific evidence to support the use of different types of retainers, both removable and fixed, and additional techniques to increase stability.  Responsibilities in retention in a much-neglected area in orthodontics. The responsibilities of the patient, the orthodontist and the general dentist will be discussed, along with the British Orthodontic Society’s national “Hold That Smile” campaign, which was led by Dr Littlewood.

Finally, Dr Littlewood will also look at different ways we may address relapse in the future.
