Conference summary
Class II malocclusion is a multifactorial entity which results from dental and skeletal factors and therefore can not be reduced to the sagittal dental classification proposed by Angle a century ago. It occurs in about 30% of the Portuguese population but represents about half of the treatments in the current practice of an orthodontist.
A correct diagnosis and knowledge of the etiology is essential for the success of the correction of these malocclusions. The decision to extract or not derives as much of the skeletal dysplasia and the severity of the crowding, as of the potential of growth of the patient. These factors determine whether the treatment is approached by orthopedics, dento-alveolar camouflage or surgery.
In these conferences, we’ll be addressing the treatment of Class II malocclusion with and without dental extractions.
