Conference summary
Osseodensification is an innovative surgical technique for implant site preparation that preserves bone bulk, contrary to conventional drilling protocols. This is possible because of special burs designed to rotate in counter-clockwise direction. With this technique, it is possible to plastically expand the bony ridge, creating a layer of compacted bone along the surface of an osteotomy. Since it pushes bone against the walls of the osteotomy instead of removing it, osseodensification can be used for both bone ridge expansion and maxillary sinus floor elevation by crestal approach with high predictability and reduced morbidity when compared with alternative techniques. Furthermore, several authors report that osseodensification can help to achieve higher primary stability and higher insertion torque values of the implants, especially in low bone density, increasing the chances of immediate loading when necessary.
Osseodensification is an innovative concept that clearly represents a paradigm shift in implant site preparation and that has many clinical advantages in comparison with conventional drilling procedures. During this presentation, the scientific evidence behind this concept will be discussed
