Conference summary

The dental practice occurs in an environment favorable to contamination, due to contact with blood, secretions or contaminated instruments, among others. Among the microorganisms responsible for this contamination are bacteria, viruses, protozoa or fungi, which are responsible for diseases that can affect health professionals, patients, and the community. The knowledge of the main microorganisms’ species, their characteristics, diseases that originate and methods of prevention, is therefore fundamental to ensure the safety of professionals and patients.

This lecture will address the main infectious diseases that can be transmitted in the dental office, with emphasis on their identification and the preventive behaviors that must be adopted to avoid their transmission. It will also be addressed the chain of infection and the main procedures that should be adopted by dental assistants at each stage to ensure the biological safety of spaces and people in the dental practice.
