Conference summary

Dental impaction is defined as the whole tooth which, being present in the jaw, did not emerge, partially or totally, in the oral cavity. The most common included teeth are the third mandíbular molars, third maxillary molars, maxillary canines and mandibular pre-molars, in order of greatest frequency.

Clinical conditions, such as the position and relation with adjacent teeth and anatomical structures, have a significant role in surgical intervention. The experience and knowledge of the surgeon may be crucial in the intervention.

In this approach, a range of intra operational complications may arise such as damage to bone, vasculature damage and soft tissue damage and, in post-op, such as pain, edema and trismus, among others.

As such, it is imperative to have a correct evaluation of the patient by way of a complete clinical history and requisition of complementary diagnostic tests for better prediction and surgical planning.

The objective of this presentation is to describe and discuss the most common complications in tooth extraction included, as well as to raise awareness of means to prevent and resolve them.
