RESUMOS E CONFERENCISTAS

Oral Cancer as a Public Health problem: the role of the Spanish Dental Association

Index priority for public health problems depends directly on the following criterions: magnitude, sereneness, importance for the community, possibility of prevention and trends. Conversely, this is inversely proportional to the cost of intervention. During this conference I will develop this aspects, focusing in oral cancer and describe an Oral Cancer Campaign promoted by the Spanish Dental Association over the last 6 years. I will analyze the results and the barriers of this campaign.

LLODRA CALVO

I have been a Professor of Preventive and Community Dentistry at Granada University (Spain) for 25 years. During this period, I continuously tried to transmit my enthusiasm for dental prevention and equity in oral health to my students.

I strongly believe in the ethical values of social justice in relation to health in general, and to Oral Health in particular. On the other hand, I would like to state that I have a medical education, specifically in Public Health, since I studied Medicine before specializing in Dentistry.

I have also been very lucky to work in underprivileged communities while being an advisor for various Health Programs in Spain and different countries of Latin America.

I am member of the World Dental Development and Health Promotion Committee at FDI. I feel a great honor to be part of a Committee which main purpose is the promotion of health.

I, of course, do it with the highest enthusiasm, wishing to be useful as a member of such a prestigious team of professionals. I am also the Delegate for Foreigners Affairs of the Spanish Dental Council (Consejo General de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de España).

“Role of the Profession in Cancer Detection”

Early detection and diagnosis of premalignant transformations is a fundamental key to survival rates. Dentists do benefit from the organization of a recall system in order to regularly visit apparently healthy patients. The majority of the dental profession is adequately trained in extra- and intraoral examination methods allowing the contemporary detection of malignant lesions. This might not be the case for early detection of cancer. An implementation of educational programs could improve examination skills. Besides inspection, different approaches for cancer detection, as salivary analysis, open a way to cost-effective early revelation. Dentists may play a determinant role in the detection of premalignant lesions and therefore improve patient’s outcome.

He is a Councilor of the World Dental Federation, FDI and the President of its European Regional Organization, ERO.

The preventive practice / Periimplantitis – prevention and treatment

Most patients see prevention positive and look for practices, who can deliver that service. In order to make prevention successful for patients the dentist has to diagnose caries according to the severity and the risk factors. With this information a preventive program can be set up for the patient and executed by trained auxiliaries. Periimplantitis is a growing problem for patients with implants. After an implant is successfully placed the prevention and treatment of periimplantitis must be the goal. That follows the same line as periodontal therapy, but the implant surface and the gingival situation are more complicated than a natural tooth. A periimplantitis treatment program is presented.
