Minimum Requirements for registration with OMD

  1. The Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas – OMD (Portuguese Dental Association) can only rule on effective requests for registration, upon formal application addressed to the Board of Directors, the lawful competent body to analyse such matters.
  2. The applications for registration with the Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas comply with procedures laid down in OMD’s Rules of Registration that can be consulted on the following link https://www.omd.pt/inscricao/regulamento/.
  3. The updated interpretation in light of the new legislation in force is imperative. The references made to the equivalence of academic levels in the legislation in force is deemed to be made to the specific recognition approved by Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16 August — which approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic levels and higher-education diplomas awarded by higher education institutions. (in accordance with Paragraph 27 of DL 66/18).
  4. The practice of dentistry in Portugal requires mandatory registration with OMD.
  5. Furthermore, applicants should consult and comply with the remaining legal requirements concerning the registration application.
  6. Specific recognition is the only legal path available through which the applicants can obtain the same legal effects of the previous path of equivalence of qualifications.
  7. The assignment of specific recognition does not relieve the holder of foreign qualification to, for professional purposes, comply with all the other rules and regulations regarding the practice of the profession and that are laid down by law.
  8. The assignment of specific recognition is a matter that is of the exclusive legal competence of Portuguese public institutions of higher education and therefore has to be requested by the holder of foreign qualifications directly to the above mentioned institutions.
  9. This information is applicable to all effective applications for registration, concerning foreign academic education, i.e. obtained in countries that are not part of the European Union or are not entitled to EU jurisdiction as they do not fall within this scope and therefore shall present a certificate that officially states the assignment of Specific Recognition as referred in Paragraph 4, Subparagraph 1c) and in Chapter V, Paragraph 20 et seq of DL 66/2018 of 18 August.
