Summary of the presentation

Special needs patients include, by definition, those with systemic, cognitive, mental, emotional or developmental disorders that require medical interventions or specialized services.

These conditions may create additional limitations in the provision of adequate oral health, dental treatment or may be associated to higher prevalence of oral pathologies.

By the other hand, the presence of dental disease, its sequelae or treatment may have serious consequences on the general health of medically compromised patients.

The establishment of early and individualized preventive strategies is, therefore, essential, allowing for the maintenance of good oral health, which, in turn, is paramount for the well being of these vulnerable children.
