Summary of the presentation

Currently, there is emerging evidence in the literature that suggests the association between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases.

The relation between the distinct pathologies can be assessed in different levels: the influence of periodontitis as a risk factor for several systemic conditions and the impact of systemic diseases on the gingival tissues.

However it is critical to state that for some conditions there is a bidirectional impact between the diseases, as it’s evident with periodontitis and diabetes mellitus.

This presentation aims to clarify the physiopathological mechanisms as the basis for the biological rationale used to explain the association between the different pathologic conditions.

It is relevant to have a current knowledge of each disease ethiopathogenesis.
