Conference summary
With the increasing prevalence of cancer and the survival of these patients, the need for their oral health assessment and guidance also grows, before, during, and after cancer treatments.
Dentists are part of multidisciplinary teams that evaluate and guide patients with suspected or diagnosed head and neck cancer, performing a thorough and personalized assessment of their oral health.
However, their role is not limited to head and neck cancer; they are essential in the approach to cancer patients of all types, considering the manifestations and effects of both cancer and its treatments on the oral cavity and adjacent structures.
The various modalities of oncological treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapies, bisphosphonates) can have direct and indirect implications for the health and oral condition of patients.
Therefore, the dentist’s approach should be tailored to the patient’s clinical condition and treatment plan, and integrated into a multidisciplinary discussion and planning process.
In this context, the dentist performs pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, surgical techniques, and applies health promotion and oral disease prevention measures.
The objective of the conference is to illustrate the key points of the dental consultation for cancer patients, regarding evaluation, diagnosis, care, and therapy, providing systematic guidelines for clinical practice.
