Conference summary

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a potentially serious condition associated with the use of antiresorptive agents, such as bisphosphonates and denosumab, as well as antiangiogenic drugs.

While these medications are widely used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, they also have important indications in oncological settings, particularly in patients with multiple myeloma and bone metastases from solid tumors, such as breast and prostate cancer.

The risk of MRONJ raises important discussions about the need for thorough evaluations prior to initiating treatment, as well as the importance of early identification of the disease in at-risk patients and the most appropriate strategies for its management. Close communication between dentists and oncologists, rheumatologists, and general practitioners, along with the application of updated clinical protocols, is essential to reduce the incidence of MRONJ and minimize its functional and psychological impact.

MRONJ represents a true challenge at the intersection between dental medicine and other medical specialties, and it requires up-to-date knowledge from oral health professionals who routinely manage patients undergoing high-risk therapies.

This presentation will emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of MRONJ. It will present the most current clinical guidelines for the management of this condition, highlighting the need for an informed, preventive, and collaborative clinical practice.
