Conference summary

Based on the CariesCare clinical tool, we will review the most relevant aspects that have changed the most in recent years regarding the management of caries disease and the lesions it produces.

Starting with the determination of the patient’s caries risk, as a factor influencing the decision on how often patients need to be examined, as well as their operative and non-operative management, the currently available diagnostic methods for detecting carious lesions on different tooth surfaces will be discussed.

Criteria for deciding which non-invasive, micro-invasive, or macro-invasive treatment is indicated for each lesion under consideration will also be presented. Emphasis will be placed on the individualized nature of our treatment plan and the criteria for operative intervention and, if it is performed, the techniques for caries removal will be reviewed.

Finally, an updated explanation will be given on how deep carious lesions should be managed in order to preserve pulp vitality.

By assumption, all concepts presented will be based on the best available scientific evidence, published guidelines, and consensus.
