Conference summary

The purpose of this presentation is to review and discuss the concept of clinical practice in endodontics based on current scientific evidence. Concepts widely accepted and those that have not reached consensus among researchers and clinicians will be covered, discussing the underlying principles of each of them.

Over time, scientific publications, conferences, and position statements from scientific societies have highlighted the principles of endodontic therapy, sometimes emphasizing technique, sometimes biology. More recently, a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been published on a variety of topics to assess the effectiveness and quality of endodontic procedures.

Minimally invasive endodontic treatment or vital pulp therapy are subject to very different interpretations, leading to controversy over their clinical implementation. Critical analysis and rational application of all the scientific information available to us is essential to improve the quality and predictability of endodontic procedures.

Are we sure that we are applying the best scientific evidence in endodontic clinical practice? What tools and equipment are available to achieve the best results? What is our basis for recommending one therapeutic option over another? How do we identify associated prognostic factors? These are some of the aspects that will be addressed in an attempt to understand how far we have come and how the best scientific evidence in endodontics can be viewed, discussing key concepts that need to be taken into account in current clinical practice.
