Conference summary

One of the great attractions of planning treatment for dentofacial deformities is the impossibility of standardizing procedures, given the constant demand to adapt them to the needs and multifactorial characteristics of each patient.

The treatment of dentofacial deformities is always aimed at improving facial aesthetics, correcting functional anomalies at the occlusal, phonatory, masticatory, articular and respiratory levels, eventual psychosocial restructuring and preventing premature facial aging, with a positive impact on overall patient satisfaction.

The basis of treatment is essentially orthodontic-surgical therapy. Just as there is no solution to the problem without surgery, there is no solution without orthodontics, since the therapeutic objective is to achieve a stable functional occlusion at the same time.

A large part of the success of the problem undoubtedly depends on the quality of the orthodontic treatment. If a good end result depends on the correctness of the surgery, some aesthetic and functional objectives may be jeopardized if the dental arches do not allow it, due to inadequate preparation.

The good results from facial remodeling through orthognathic surgery always require detailed planning.

The pressure exerted by some patients, who for time and economic reasons are not very tolerant of prior orthodontic treatment and are asking for orthognathic surgery to be brought forward, and the adoption of this practice by some professionals in recent years as something new, modern and advisable, are the main reasons for the theme of our conference.

Step by step, we will discuss the priorities of pre-surgical orthodontic preparation, the principles that should be followed, the consequences of a lack of rigor in its execution and the definition of the appropriate time for surgical intervention.

We will also look at issues that need to be solved at the same time – the presence of missing teeth, the arches present at the time of surgery, complementary orthodontic devices for surgery and who should make the surgical guide plates.
