Conference summary

The field of plastic periodontal surgery is subject to enormous scientific and clinical effort in order to improve existing treatment concepts with regard to gingival recession treatment.

Presently the best and most contemporary treatment option to cover gingival recessions is mainly related to the search for a surgical technique that provides predictable treatment outcomes from both perspectives – quantity and quality.

The treatment of the gingival recessions in the maxilla is defined by clear the aesthetic principles, the inferior incisors should be diagnosed and treated for functional reasons.

Coronally advanced flaps and their derivatives have been proven in the maxillary region but there is a lack of evidence concerning the application of this technique in the lower incisors.

Qualitative criteria of success, such as the chromatic and texture integration of the covering tissues, the marginal tissue contour or scar tissue formation move more and more up in the center of interest, so that today, the ultimate goal of root coverage procedures may be described as the complete coverage of the recession defect associated with minimal probing depths and nice aesthetics.
