Conference summary

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), in children aged between 2 and 8 years is estimated to be between 1 and 5%.

Recent studies show that untreated apnoea in children and adolescents is related to poor school performance, lack of concentration, irritability, hyperactivity and bad behaviour.

We know today that the early diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing in children and adolescents allows the prevention of other associated diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, as well as preventing dental malocclusions, chewing and swallowing disorders. and bad posture.

Identifying risk factors, such as adenoids and tonsils hypertrophy, evaluating genetic pattern and the existence of parafunctional habits and their consequences on the growth of craniofacial structures, positions dentistry (in particular, qualified dentists in sleep medicine and dental sleep medicine), as a fundamental area, in the early diagnosis of obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (as is the case of Apnoea and Snoring, in children and adolescents), and in the multidisciplinary treatment with other medical areas, such as Pulmonology, Otorhinolaryngology and Pediatrics , speech therapist, among others.
