Synthetic corticosteroids are one of the most used pharmacologic classes in the world, contributing to symptom relief in a wide range of pathologies due to its anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and vasoconstrictive effects.
Oral pathology therapeutics constitutes no exception, however, its usage in this field has some particularities.
Many of the corticosteroids applications in stomatological system pathologies assume an off-label character. In oral cavity pathology it is of the utmost importance to fully understand the physiology of the disease we intend to approach. On the other hand, the medication mechanism of action should also be considered, as well as its potency, formulation, duration of action and clinical indication. Once these concepts are understood, we can proceed to a responsible usage of the resources, with the utmost benefit for the patient.
