Conference summary

Demographic changes reflect the aging of the population in an incremental way. This older part of the population demands more and more dental care at all levels. Thus, it is logical to think that gerodontology’s aim is to care for the oral health of our elders as well as knowing the factors related to oral aging. Its development as a discipline implies a new philosophy of oral treatment in the provision of dental care in elderly patients, especially the frail, confined to their home or institutionalized.
In this talk we intend to tackle in a multidisciplinary way the various aspects that comprise oral health and dental treatment of older adults. First, the medical, pharmacological and psychological aspects that make up the systemic profile of older adults is addressed. Aspects related to oral diseases, such as root caries, advanced chronic periodontal disease, xerostomia and oral lesions (candidiasis, oral cancer) are treated in more detail. Finally, we summarize the current state of specific dental treatment in older patients, from an integrative preventive, surgical, conservative, prosthodontic and implantological perspective.
