Scientific presentations at the Congress of the Portuguese Dental Association

  • The previous presentation of papers in other national events constitutes an exclusion criterion.
  • Each author may only submit one abstract as first author for oral communication, one abstract for poster or one abstract for presentation in video format. Authors can, however, co-author other papers.
  • Each scientific presentation cannot have more than five authors.
  • The scientific presentations can be research, review or clinical case(s).
  • When submitting the abstract of the scientific presentation at www.omd.pt/en/congress authors can choose whether they want it to be candidate for a congress award.
  • All scientific presentations award candidates must be submitted in poster format, together with the abstract, regardless of being presented in the congress in the form of poster or oral communication.
  • The scientific presentations award candidates, after evaluation and approval by the scientific committee of OMD, may be published in a supplement of the journal “International Poster Journal of Dentistry and Oral Medicine (IPJ)” under a partnership established with the Portuguese Dental Association.
  • In order to be published in IPJ Journal, authors will have to submit the paper after the congress, using the email address of the journal http://ipj.quintessenz.de/submission within one week after the end of the congress. The submission to the journal is made after registration of the author in http://ipj.quintessenz.de/submission.
  • The author/presenter of Oral Communication, Poster or Presentation in Video format, must be registered in the congress by the deadline for paper submission and be present at the date and time of presentation. In case the author/presenter is unable to attend, he/she should notify the scientific committee ([email protected]) and appoint a substitute co-author (who must be registered in the Congress). In case of non-compliance with this procedure, the author may be prevented from presenting in future meetings, and shall not be entitled to presentation diploma.
  • Only abstracts submitted online will be accepted at www.omd.pt/en/congress Abstracts will not be accepted by fax, e-mail, post or delivered “in-hand” at OMD. The scientific presentations must follow the code of conduct of OMD.
  • Problems related to internet access cannot justify failure to meet deadlines.

 

Oral communications

  • Not award candidate:
    • The submission of the abstract, in Portuguese and English, will be made online at www.omd.pt/en/congress by the determined deadline.
  • Award candidate:
    • The submission is subject to the general and the specific regulations, including:
      • Submission by the deadline determined, together with the abstract at www.omd.pt/en/congress, of a poster representative of the final paper, in PDF format and in English (in order to be published in the journal – “International Poster Journal of Dentistry and Oral Medicine”). The same should have the maximum dimensions of 160 cm height and 90 cm in width, before being converted into PDF. The PDF must necessarily be less than 20MB.
    • All the oral communications, award candidates or not, will be assessed by a jury, appointed by the scientific committee that will select the winner of the award for oral communication, review (s) or clinical case(s), among those oral communication award candidate.
    • The presentation must not exceed a maximum of 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of discussion.

 

Posters

  • Not award candidate:
    • The submission of the abstract, in Portuguese and English, will be made online at www.omd.pt/en/congress by the deadline determined.
    • The posters that are not award candidates shall be printed on paper with a maximum 160cm height and 90cm wide. They should remain displayed throughout the Congress, and the presence of author by the poster, in time and place to be determined by the Organizing Committee, is mandatory. If at least one of the authors is not present in the time set by the organizing committee, it will result in non-issuance of the presentation diploma.
  • Award candidate:
    • The submission is subject to the general and the specific regulations, including:
      • Posters should have the maximum dimensions of 160cm height and 90cm wide, before being converted to PDF. The PDF must necessarily have less than 20MB.
      • Submission by the deadline determined, together with the abstract at www.omd.pt/en/congress, of the final poster in PDF format, in Portuguese and English (in order to be published in the journal – “International Poster Journal of Dentistry and Oral Medicine”).
      • The poster award candidate will be presented in electronic format, provided by the organization of the congress, to a jury appointed by the Scientific Committee, and therefore it is not necessary to print it.
      • All award candidates posters will be evaluated by a jury appointed by the Scientific Committee, that will select the winner among the research, review or clinical case posters.
      • The time and place will be set by the organizing committee and the presentation should not exceed 5 minutes

 

Presentations in video format

  • Must be clinical and comply with specific norms for this presentation:
    • Each presentation in video format can have a maximum of 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of discussion;
    • The video must be 75% of the presentation;
    • The author must add six images taken from video, in digital format (.jpg, .png, .bmp) when submitting the work;
    • Must be submitted in digital format through video;
    • The author must comment on the video during its display in the room;
    • The video must be in one of the following formats:
      • AVI
      • WMV
      • MOV
      • MPEG
    • The author/presenter of each paper must:
      • Enrol in the Congress by June 16th, 2014.
      • Have all payments of membership fees up to date.
      • Present the oral communication, poster or presentation in video format at a time and location to be determined by the Organizing Committee.

 

Rules for paper submission

    • The abstract must be submitted online with a maximum of 250 words in Portuguese and English.
    • The title should not exceed 12 words.
    • 6-10 keywords for each article must be submitted in Portuguese and English.
    • It is mandatory to fill in all fields in the form.
    • At the time of abstract submission, the authors can choose whether they want the paper to be candidate for the congress award.
    • Abstracts of research papers must necessarily contain the following items:
      • Introduction
      • Objectives
      • Materials and Methods
      • Results
      • Conclusions
      • Clinical Implications
      • Sources of funding (if any)
    • The title of presentations of literature review should indicate that it is a systematic or narrative review, and the abstract must necessarily contain the following items:
      • Introduction
      • Objectives and Methods (bibliographical analysis, keywords, years reviewed: eg 2000-2004 and statistical analysis, if used)
      • Results
      • Conclusions
      • Clinical Implications
      • Sources of funding (if any)
    • Abstracts of clinical case presentations must be substantiated in the current literature for its originality or rarity, and scientific or educational interest to the class, and must necessarily contain the following items:
      • Description of the clinical case
      • Discussion
      • Conclusion
      • Sources of funding (if any)
    • Summaries of the presentations in video format should consist of:
      • Objectives of the procedure;
      • Presentation of the clinical case (clinical procedure step by step and scientific support to substantiate the procedure);
      • Immediate, short and medium term results (advisable to present the results of three months and one year)
      • Discussion;
      • Conclusion;
    • The abstracts submitted will be evaluated by the scientific committee of the congress, based on the scientific quality of the work, judged by the abstracts. Authors must submit the type of presentation desired (poster or oral communication), at the discretion of the scientific committee for approval of that format or suggest changing.
    • For Congress award candidate posters, besides the submission of the abstract, the PDF of the final poster must be submitted (in English).
    • For congress award candidate papers with oral communication, besides the submission of the abstract, the PDF of a poster representative of the final work must be submitted (in English).
    • For presentations in video format, besides the submission of the abstract, authors must submit six images taken from video in digital format (.jpg, .png, .bmp);

 

Deadlines

  • June 16th, 2014 – submission of abstracts and poster in PDF (application terms for award) of scientific presentations;
  • June 16th, 2014 – registration of the author / presenter in Congress;
  • July 31st, 2014 – notification of acceptance / rejection of the paper by the scientific committee and indication of the day, time and room where the presentation will take place.
