 2. Social Commitment

  • Deeply concerned with environmental protection, and in compliance with the legislation in force regarding hazardous medical waste, OMD has signed a protocol with a certified company, in order to carry out the collection and disposal of this type of waste produced by dental clinics and offices throughout the country.

Formative and informative actions:
  • Keeping up with the constant development of dentistry and the consequent need for technical and scientific updating, OMD has launched a Continuous Training Programme for all its members, which include training courses, lectures, conferences and meetings all across the country.
  • The OMD’s Annual Meeting is another great event organised by this Association. Its first edition took place in 1992 and had 700 participants. Since then, it has steadily grown, with more than 2,500 dentists enrolled in 2005. This event, the biggest health conference held in Portugal, also features Expo-Dentária, an exhibition of dental material and equipment.
  • The OMD issues a monthly Newsletter, an official publication specifically for dentists, which is an excellent means of communication and information for all members.
  • It also issues a yearly Dentist’s Guide, in order to provide professionals with guidelines along their careers by offering easy and quick access to the most useful and relevant information about the practice of dentistry.

In brief, although the OMD is one of the Portuguese youngest unions (its members are 35 years old in average), it is a dynamic organisation made up of young professionals willing to give their contribution towards a new approach to dentistry and general health.

These young dentists are committed to their career and their continuous training, in order to provide the best possible service, looking at the patient as a whole person and thus raising the overall standards of health care.
